In the last decade, home schooling has become very popular especially with middle and upper-middle class families. There have been many arguments before about home schooling. Pedagogues say that there are pros and cons in home schooling but it appears that the former outweigh the latter and therefore, a lot of families are now choosing home schooling over normal schools.

Cultures vary and somehow the relations within the family are affected too. In some cultures, family ties are fairly strong, but there are also those who don't have very good relationships with other family members. However, through home schooling, family ties and relationships are improved. Parents will spend more time with their kids because of the home schooling program and the children will have to listen to their parents too. Communication is much improved and both parties have to learn about the importance of speaking and listening.

Many families prefer home schooling because of its diversity. However, since the cost of home education is a bit more than normal schools, the financial standing of the family is very important. However, even without thinking about the financial factor, many parents will still opt for home schooling, because it can ensure their children's safety. Public schools often have dangerous environments that can affect children enormously, but if they are in a home schooling program, they can stay away from these situations and their parents will be there to supervise them.

Rather than placing the children at a public school, many parents prefer home schooling because the educational environment in the public schools is not that conducive. In public schools, very young pupils may experience problems that can affect them socially, mentally, and academically for a long time. Pedagogues that have conducted studies, claim that children learn better in a good environment surrounded by loved ones. A further benefit of home schooling is that children can learn according to their ability. You can't just give a new lesson, if the previous one hasn't been learned yet. It may take longer, but the results are definitely better.

As mentioned previously, home schooling is a bit more costly. If you think that you might be able to cut down the educational expenses of your child, you're wrong. Home schooling expenses are almost the same as those of traditional schools. However, if you participate in the forums of the parents of home-schoolers, you will discover that there are ways to reduce costs. Of course, you will need to spend on the resource materials, computer, and internet, but you can also use outside resources like cultural events, public libraries and many others.

You will get even more cost-saving notions, if you get in touch with other parents. The Internet provides numerable possibilities and with a bit of research, you can surely come up with ways to ease the costs. If you don't want to pay for teachers, then you will have to learn the lessons too, however, you have already learned the various subjects in your kids' educational program, so you only need to review them. You can get further learning material online or the bookshop and later on, educate your children.

So, it is plain to see, that home schooling is far and away the best option, especially if your child is still very young. So, it all depends on you and your child, whether they continue this kind of education until they graduate for college.

Are you thinking about homeschooling? Learn about the pros and cons of homeschooling before making your decision. With homeschooling you have total control and flexibility of your child's education. But is that an advantage or disadvantage?

Can you as a parent, but not a certified teacher, successfully teach your child what they need to know to become productive and prosperous adults? Yes, but you must go in knowing that this is a tremendous responsibility. However the reward is priceless.

One major advantage of homeschooling is the fact that you can pick a curriculum that mirrors your own religious and moral beliefs, something that cannot be done in public schools. You have control over shaping your child's values.

However, successfully homeschooling your child demands the following two requirements from the parents. First, a true desire to teach your child. Second, a willingness to put forth the effort to make it happen.

If you want to homeschool because of a sense of duty or religious obligation, and not because of a desire to help your child, homeschooling may not be the right choice. Without the desire and determination of the parent, not enough effort will be put forth to properly educate the child.

A major disadvantage of public school is the vast differences in each class. Each student has different learning styles and each class has various discipline issues. A public school teacher just cannot devote enough individual time to each student to ensure they are working at their full potential. This is where homeschooling excels.

A disadvantage of public schools is that their curriculum is all laid out for them and they must move at a predetermined rate. Children who pick up the material quickly, will have to wait - any usually get bored and start to lose interest. Other children will take longer to understand the subject. But the teacher only has a certain window to work within, so some students may never understand the subject before moving on.

A major advantage with homeschooling is the fact that you control the teaching pace and curriculum. If your child is struggling, whether they need an extra 30 minutes or 3 hours, you can adjust your teaching schedule to make sure they understand before moving on. Likewise, if you find a subject your child gets excited about, extra time can be allotted to fuel their personal educational quest.

So are there any disadvantages to homeschooling? Of course there are. The biggest is probably the amount of time you must devote to it. It is up to you to figure out your child's curriculum, for record keeping, and for learning and applying different teaching styles. But the education that your child will receive will be well worth all the effort.

I recently enrolled my step daughter in an accredited online high school. She dropped out of public high school. Not wanting to give up on her, we immediately started looking for alternatives to traditional public school. My step daughter's stumbling block was the standardized testing mandated by the state under "No Child Left Behind".

My step daughter is Vietnamese, and was failed two times in her earlier grades. In high school, she was doing much better. She was doing so well, in fact that she made the honor roll. I was quite proud of her. What happened next, however, was a real set back. Only a matter of days after making the honor roll, she flunked the state exams.

Children who have been failed and had to repeat two grades have a more than 90% chance of dropping out of school. I knew this, but I was still hoping that she would defy the statistics. No such luck. Now we were up against the wall again.

When I hear people say they support standardized testing, I have very mixed feelings. Our children are not "standardized". This just reduces our schools to "test-prep centers.

They are so, so different. How can you squeeze them through a one size fits all, grinder? Why would you want to do that? As they get older, they get even more individual, and unique. Why stifle that? Our country needs imaginative thinkers, and creative experts. Let's give them some slack.

I am a fierce advocate of self paced lessons. This is not possible in traditional public schools. I think that a child should be able to work through one lesson at his own pace until it is completed, and mastered, before moving to the next one.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Compare this to the traditional schooling, where large classes are "taught" en mass and where the lesson is "pitched" to the average, or "standardized" student. Individual attention is very minimal. Teachers just don't have time.

It seems to me that online schools are perfect for self pacing. As a matter of fact, with the clear stresses and unfairness of "No Child Left Behind", online education will become more and more popular. Virtual schools have the exact solution.

One other strength is virtual schools is the ability to offer many more courses than public school. Basic economics, and poor funding hamper public schools from being able to offer more class options. An online school can open up creative alternatives for diverse students. Classes focused on testing are also very boring.

For my step daughter, and myself, we decided on an online school with good accreditation, challenging curriculum, and 100 courses to choose from. The decision took days of shopping, and elimination. The high priced schools didn't fit my budget. The free schools tied to the public system were also rejected because of the same old testing regime. If you decide to explore online alternative schools, shop carefully.

What are the pros and cons of homeschooling? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? For each instance of homeschooling, the child's needs to be looked at individually. An advantage for one child can end up being a disadvantage for another.

Can you as a parent, but not a certified teacher, successfully teach your child what they need to know to become productive and prosperous adults? Yes, but you must go in knowing that this is a tremendous responsibility. However the reward is priceless.

What you can do as a parent that a public school teacher cannot provide is the ability to incorporate such things as your own religious and moral beliefs into the curriculum. By taking control of your child's education, you are responsible for shaping your child's value system.

However, successfully homeschooling your child demands the following two requirements from the parents. First, a true desire to teach your child. Second, a willingness to put forth the effort to make it happen.

The desire to homeschool must be true if you are to be successful. Homeschooling is not a walk in the park. It takes time and effort to teach your child and have them reach their full potential. Some subjects may be easy for you and your child, others may take a lot more work. If you are homeschooling out of a sense of duty or obligation, you may soon find yourself without the determination to go on.

I just completed enrolling my step daughter in a good quality, accredited online high school. She had decided to drop out of public school. Since I was unwilling to give up on her, we began searching for alternatives. Her situation is not so different from thousands of students in the U.S..

My step daughter had been failed twice in her earlier grades due to her English. She was catching up, however. In fact, in her first year of high school, she made the honor roll. I was really proud of her. That is why I was so shocked at what happened next. Shortly after making the honor roll, she badly failed the state exams.

Statistics show that children who fail two grades or more are over 90% more likely to drop out of school. I was aware of this, but I thought that she would defy the data. She did not.

I have to laugh when someone says he supports "No Child Left Behind" standardized testing. What do you mean by "standardized testing?" Is there such a thing as a "standardized" child? Even the little ones have their own little personalities. Some are creative. Some are like wilderness creatures. Some are like princesses.

These students are so, so different. Shall we put them in a food processor and until it spits out homogeneous pulp? Creativity is what sets America apart from other countries where rote memorization is the norm in school. Why quash that creativity? Our kids need air to breath, and room to be themselves.

I am a strong supporter of self paced learning. Traditional public schools are the antithesis of self paced learning. In an ideal learning environment, each child works at his own pace, and advances only when he has mastered the lesson he is working on.

The other strong point in favor of online schooling is that they can more easily offer a wide variety of courses that can appeal to broad and differing interests. I'm talking about doing this in high school, not college. I want to see all kinds of wild courses is far out subjects. Make them available, in addition to the core classes. Why bore high school students with ever narrowing, test-centered, lessons?

For me and my step daughter, we chose an online school that offers over 100 courses, has good accreditation, and a challenging curriculum. It took me days of shopping, and sorting before deciding on one. I had to reject the high priced schools. We also rejected the schools tied to the public school system, and the testing. Take care in deciding for yourself.

I recently completed the enrollment for my step daughter in a fully accredited online high school. Out of frustration, she was preparing to drop out of her public high school. This was not acceptable to me, so we began seeking alternatives. Her dilemma was much like many kids today.

She had been held back twice in earlier grades, but was catching up. In fact, in her first year of high school, she made the honor roll. I was really proud of her. What happened next was quite a shock, however. Shortly after making the honor roll, she badly failed the state exams.

She now faced being held back a third time. The data indicated that being held back twice causes over a 90% chance of dropping out of high school. Somehow, I had hoped that she would defy the odds. It didn't happen.

An online school is able to allow each student to progress at his own speed. This is the heart of the value of online education over traditional classrooms. This is also the reason online schools are growing in popularity.

The other strong point in favor of online schooling is that they can more easily offer a wide variety of courses that can appeal to broad and differing interests. I'm talking about doing this in high school, not college. I want to see all kinds of wild courses is far out subjects. Make them available, in addition to the core classes. All children learn at different speeds so this way it is possible to have them learn at a pace that suits them and of course there will be more control over what subjects they do learn.
Those parents considering homeschooling their children have probably already looked into this seriously so they are aware of why they want to do this. All children learn at different speeds so this way it is possible to have them learn at a pace that suits them and of course there will be more control over what subjects they do learn. However, do you know how much damage you can cause both in the mental and social context, if you do not make your choices wisely?

Every child needs someone to talk to and someone to play with, and they find their mates in school. Has it ever occurred to you what opinions the other public school children have about children who are home schooled? They are of the opinion that children are only home schooled when they have severe mental problems or because their parents are out of their mind. Be prepared for your child to be humored or teased as the child is considered to be abnormal. These challenges must be overcome if you want your child to have a positive social life and be able to function amongst their peers when they get to college.

By deciding to home school, it becomes the parent's responsibility to find friendships for the child and this task is just as important as the actual school work. Here are some tips, which would assist you to give your child the correct direction, if you want him to have a normal and decent social life. Know your neighborhood and start with where you live: How many children close to your child's age live nearby? Do you know the parents? If not, you need to. Seek out parents nearby and let them know you have a child that you'd like to set up a play date. Because you have started the process, it is also up to you to take the initiative of organizing a kid party and calling a clown perhaps. Invite all the local kids over, their parents and organize a ballgame, fishing, bowling, or any other activity that children enjoy - even offer to baby-sit.

Sporting activities offer the best opportunities where children bond with each other. Since they play together they also spend a lot of time building a bond, and you too get an opportunity to meet other parents. If you child is handicapped or challenged physically which makes it embarrassing for him to make public appearances, then girls/boys scout or similar kid organizations are the best option you have where he could join.

Do not be so protective that home schooling prevents your children from enjoying and learning about life outside their home. Though it is wise to safeguard children from all the bad things out there, it is also critical that they have similar exposures as other kids. Already your kid is getting branded as a 'funny' kid and having problems to cope with it, can you imagine where it would land him in the social circle if he was clueless about TV shows, the latest bands or even the current kid fashion trends? Unless they are exposed to life as it is, they would have a tough time interacting with others and would soon be treated as an alien.
